Save Space With Vertical Gardening

What is vertical gardening? 51zoK6RfJ6L

Vertical gardening is used in small space gardening and urban gardening in order to grow more with less space.

The basic principle is that you use planting techniques that enable you to grow up instead of out

Here is a quick look at three of the best vertical garden tools that I have found:

3. Trellising

Adding trellising to your garden can greatly increase your amount of saved space. This is a great addition to backyard gardens because it can be added to existing garden spaces with ease. The basics of Trellising is that you grow plants up a trellis that you would normally grow across the ground. The type of vertical gardening is used with plants such as vine flowers, cucumbers, squash, and grapes.

  • Relatively easy to set up
  • Saves lots of space
  • Ease of harvesting
  • Adds dimension to garden look
  • Can add shade to areas of garden

  • Only useful with specific plants
  • Can cause shading out of other plants

PRODUCTS: For the most part trellising can be done easily enough by yourself with a few pieces from the home improvement store, but there are a few different products out there that will add some curb appeal to your garden. Here are a few examples:

Panacea Products 36-Inch Fan Pot Trellis
2′ L Critter Guard Cedar Garden Trellis
A Frame Light Green Trellis

2. Tower Gardens

Tower gardens have recently become more and more popular because of their improved design and appearance. Tower gardens are usually stack-able and are great for balcony gardening because you can have many plants in each stack without having to have any land. Many of these are designed so that water flows from the top stack to the bottom allowing you to water many plants at once.

  • Can use in very small space
  • Do not need any ground
  • Fast and efficient watering
  • Can grow larger variety of plants

  • Need to add soil to each cell
  • Setup required
  • Need to make sure plants get enough sunlight

PRODUCTS: With the increase in popularity of tower gardens many different models have flooded the market, making it hard to find the right one. I have looked through many and have chosen these as the top three for price and quality:

Akro-Mils Medium Stack-A-Pot
3 Tier Stackable Garden Self Watering Tiers From Top Down

1. Wall Gardens

Wall gardens are usually what you see when you look up vertical gardening because they are very visually appealing. There are many different types of wall gardens, some are even stack-able like tower gardens. Wall gardens are a great way to double your gardening space given that you have unused wall space. The main drawback I see from wall gardens are that they can be very pricey.

  • Visually appealing
  • Almost no space needed
  • Wide range of options
  • Can grow larger variety of plants
  • Ease of harvesting

  • Generally more expensive option
  • Make sure wall gets enough sunlight
  • Watering may be a challenge
  • Need wall

PRODUCTS: There is a wide range of products for wall gardens. This makes it easier to find the one that fits your particular needs most. I have chosen the following based off ease of use as well as appearance and price.

Meiwo 7 Pocket Hanging Vertical Garden
